CANTONS OF SWITZERLAND

History and Modernity

The specifics of cantonal coats of arms are dictated by medieval history, when coats of arms belonged to landowners—kings, counts, and other nobles. However, the independent Swiss lived by the principle of "being their own master," even if a canton consisted of three houses high in the mountains. This is why cantonal coats of arms are generally derived from their flags, which were often simply two-colored.
